What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL™)
IPL is a new technology which involves the application of non-coherent (non-laser) broadened pulsed light to the surface of the skin. It is multi-chromatic, which means it covers a wide range of wavelengths. The wavelength of the light chosen determines the depth of pulsed light penetration. This, together with the duration of each pulse, will determine the effect that the light therapy will have on the skin.
How does the treatment work?
An intense pulsed light is allied in a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. Without damaging the skin, the light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the haemoglobin of the abnormally dilated capillaries or the melanin of the pigmented lesion. The heat causes the lesion to fragment and the dilated capillaries to close, the body then begins its natural healing process. IPL™ stimulates fibroblast activity encouraging the formation of new collagen and elastin, thereby improving the appearance of the fine lines and an overall skin texture.
How many treatments are needed?
For optimal results 3 - 5 treatments are recommended three to four weeks apart. Depending on the individual skin condition follow-up treatments may be recommended to maintain results.
What is the treatment like?
Treatment may vary from 15 - 45 minutes depending on the size of the area to be treated. Firstly the treated area is cleansed and cool gel is applied. When the pulse is delivered the sensation is similar to the snap of an elastic band and there is a sensation of heat. Pain is minimal but the cool compresses are applied to soothe and cool the skin.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are rare. Immediately following the treatment the skin may appear flushed, brown pigmented spots may appear darker and capillaries may be visible. In rare instances, temporary swelling and/or blistering can occur.
Which areas can be treated?
This treatment can be used for effectively treating and improving the appearance of the face, neck, décolleté and hands - however the neck and décolleté would require more treatments than the face.
